In Part 1 of “Iconic Bags”, Bagaholicboy covered five bags he considers timeless classics, including the ‘alma’, ‘amazona’, ‘city’, ‘classic flap’ and ‘coffer’. Here are the next five that deck the hall of fame.

The Muse, YSL, from $2500 An icon in its own right, the YSL ‘muse’ has been around for the longest time. Worn by almost every celebrity worth her salt since Day 1, it has come back season after season in materials as varied as classic leather and exotic skins. An entry-level ‘muse’ will set you back around $2500 or so; inexpensive considering the classic dome-shaped bag with the signature Y emblem will garner you all the right ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’.

The PS1, Proenza Schouler, from $2500 One of those new icons, the PS1 hails from ‘hip-till-it-hurts’ dynamic duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the boys behind Proenza Schouler. Established in 2002, the PS1 quickly became a cult hit, known for its classic good looks that’s meshed with gorgeous leathers and even more outstanding craftsmanship. Whichever way you choose to carry it (either as a hand-carry or over the shoulder), it’s one of those cult hits that’s been replicated a 100 times over by other brands, but never truly copied. Unfortunately the PS1 is not available in Singapore, so Net-A-Porter (which ships internationally) will be your best bet for now.

The Peekaboo, Fendi, from $3800 Another new icon, the ‘peekaboo’ is Karl Lagerfeld’s contribution to Fendi which saw the bags fly out of the boutiques as soon as they were placed on the shelves. Called the peekaboo because of the way the tote gapes open when unsecured (and thus giving you a peek into its contents), it has already been launched in a myriad of sizes and materials since it came out in the S/S09. It’s also been called the more affordable ‘birkin’, which is good since the latter is beyond the reach of most mere mortals anyway. |

The Bayswater, Mulberry, from $1800 One of Mulberry’s most recognisable bags, the ‘bayswater’ is another one of those classics that often replicated but never copied. An ode to English sensibility and styling, it draws you in despite having the least of embellishments. Distinguished by her long handle, this frame bag makes a great tote for work, or play, depending on the material you select which ranges from goat leather to denim and even haircalf. Lush!

The Knot, Bottega Veneta, from $1500 Perhaps the most understated evening clutch around, the ‘knot’ from Bottega Veneta is as iconic as any other. Famed for the knot clasp closure (and thus named the knot), the ‘hardness’ of it is soften by the rounded body of the clutch. Measuring 17 cm by 10 cm, the clutch is also deceptively roomy, a feature that’s always welcomed by the ladies. A good-entry level piece will be the ones in satin, though they can be seriously addictive and soon you’ll be lusting after the ones in leather, exotics and metals as well. You have been warned!
