While the global economy seems to be on the recovery in 2010, shoppers are still considerably careful with their spending. And in response to that, some of the big name designers like Celine have been toning down on extravagance in terms of style and instead, highlighting simple looks that can easily be executed.

Some of the key looks this season reflect that trend, as there’s generally more emphasis on clean, uncluttered styles and soft floras. If you’ve been observing these trends, and wondering how you can wear them, this week’s article will be very relevant. Apart from highlighting the season’s key styles, I’ll also be sharing where you can buy these pieces. As always, I believe in recommending pieces that are less common and classic in design so you can really stretch your dollar and stand out at the same time.

Style 1: Clean simplicity

This year, the collections of Celine, Calvin Klein and Donna Karen give us clean lines and feminine minimalism. It could possibly be due to the anticipation of tight spending, but designers are spot on in returning back to clean lines after two years of architectural silhouettes.

More specifically, this year’s simplicity look revolves around shorter hemlines, so look out for shorts and mid-thigh dresses. Pleated details are also extremely favoured by designers. Lightweight fabric and a simple silhouette mean that the trend is also suitable for work. One of the best ways to wear this look is to stick to neutral shades and white. Check out French Connection for simple and classic pieces.

Style 2: Keep it short

In line with the trend of shorter hemlines, shorts are really hot this season. Personally, I think shorts have always been a key item in the Singaporean wardrobe—and it’s also quite an accepted look here. Shorts are great for the beach and for laidback weekends, not to mention the convenience they provide for an urban girl who is always on the move. But if you want a more polished look, go for well-tailored shorts and wear them with a more dressy top or jacket.

For variety, I would suggest going for a pair of floral shorts or one with pinstripes in candy colour. You can also go for one that’s made from an interesting fabric such as satin. You’ll find quite a good selection of shorts at places like Warehouse and Mango.

Style 3: Play with patterns

Some of my personal favourite looks for 2010 are patterned pieces. Be it floral frocks or neon-clashing prints, I think such pieces add depth and variety to an otherwise all-serious wardrobe. If brilliant colours and psychedelic prints are too loud for your personality or the workplace, go for simpler prints such as graphic black & white prints, or a polka-dots, as these are generally easier to pull off and give you more mileage in the long run. If you’re going for loud prints, the key thing to remember is to pick pieces with simple shapes and designs. Karen Millen stocks extremely wearable and flattering prints.
