Last year, Singapore stunned the fashion world by placing #8 in a poll of the world's most fashionable cities. Of course, a lot of naysayers (surprisingly, Singaporeans themselves) were questioning this coveted "title", claiming Singaporeans only wear shorts and t-shirts, so we didn’t “deserve” it.

While that may be, the fact of the matter is that Singapore's hot and humid weather calls for little else. Here are some other ways to wear shorts that are functional for our weather, while still, dare we say, "fashionable".

Loose, fitted blouse

The blouse is making a comeback these days, to which we say, thank goodness. There is nothing better than a beautifully tailored, feminine blouse. Not only does it bring a feminine flare to your outfit, but its structure can make the most casual of shorts look that more dressy. Get a loose fabric for an airy, cooling feel. Pair it with anything but flip flops and you've got yourself one relaxed, casual outfit.

Tunic Shirts

For a laid-back, bohemian vibe, grab an easy to wear tunic shirt. Not only it is a whole outfit - the amazing colours and patterns already "make" the outfit, no other accessories needed - it's also a great way to even out proportions a pear shaped body, which many women complain about. Pair it with sandals, a hobo bag, and give Nicole Richie, Queen of Boho Chic, a run for her money.

Fitted tees and tanks

At the end of the day, we really see no problem with shorts and a t-shirt or tank top. However, getting a fitted tee really makes a big difference and looks less sloppy. Want to dress it up even more? Throw on a blazer and heels ala Victoria Beckham and Charlize Theron for casual but classy look.

Also – remember that shorts do not only need to be Daisy Dukes (short, blue cut off denim). There are lace shorts, leather shorts, silk shorts – you name it. Mix and match with different textures and lengths and be sure to always pair it with great shoes and a handbag for a complete look.

What do you say, Singapore? Next year we’ll be #1?
