We’re all too familiar with America’s Next Top Model theme music where Tyra Banks goes, ‘Wanna be on top?’ Tyra surely practices what she preaches ― the African American supermodel/ businesswoman/ Harvard graduate/ host is on top of her game, even at 9:30am in the morning on a Sunday.
In nude stilettoes with her locks perfectly in place, she gushed about the size of her first class plush pad on Singapore Airlines ― what better way to steal the heart of journalists by complimenting our home in the skies, and impressing us with her privilege? She tweeted this photo before her flight, saying ‘Airplane Series, Part 3: I’ve been traveling since I was a teen but this is next-level ... the seat is like a boat!’
Rumour has it that Tyra was in town to film the season finale of Asia’s Next Top Model, the first Asian franchise of Top Model, and the first of its kind in the world where multiple countries are involved instead of just one. The judges for Asia’s Next Top Model have been rumoured to be Nadya Hutagalung, an established model and public figure of Indonesian-Australian descent, who is also the host for the programme; Daniel Boey, a fashion director with 16 years of industry experience; and Todd Anthony Tyler, a Canadian photographer based in Shanghai.
Tyra commented on the Top Model global phenomenon during the press conference. She said, ‘I thought America’s Next Top Model was going to last two seasons ... we just finished Cycle 19 which will be airing in the US in a week, and now we’re in Singapore and all these photographers are here because of a little show I came up with years ago? It’s still a little surreal for me.”
She explains why the winners of Top Model are almost never seen again after the show airs, “It’s hard for models to have staying power in an age where everybody seems to be fascinated with celebrities. They are the people getting magazine covers and beauty campaigns. But our girls work a lot ― not necessarily the winners, just like American Idol, but the girl who went home fifth or sixth, yeah, she’s working a lot. What I’m really happy about is that the girls from our international versions are doing big fashion weeks ― they’re walking New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Milan.”
“It’s really sad that as women we cannot be beautiful in our differences. Our bodies go in and out of fashion, some eras it was about being thin, like Twiggy’s time, and then it was about being athletic, and then it was about having a big booty like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian, and then it’s back to being skinny but not too skinny.”
“But what the Tyra Banks Company and Next Top Model strive for is not cookie cutter,” she added.
The Asian spin-off of America’s Next Top Model, Asia’s Next Top Model, is slated to air later this year.
